Hello and thank you for coming to check out the Student Life portion of our Virtual Open House! My name is Shawn Gudmundson and I am the Dean of Student Life here at Foxborough Regional Charter School.

I like to think of the community at FRCS as a living organism that feeds on the energy of students and staff alike. It thrives off of diversity and opportunity. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, sharing experiences and perspectives that help shape our population into empathetic citizens and leaders. Families are invited to be a part of several initiatives to involve themselves in the development of our students, in and out of the classroom. Students can dive into a myriad of offerings from the first steps they take into the building as they enter Kindergarten to the last steps they take as they walk across the stage at graduation Senior year.

A current middle school student said “I love being in a class filled with people I've known for 5+ years” which is something that is so special about FRCS. As a K-12 school, students and staff have the ability to grow together over the years, forming lasting relationships that often extend into post-secondary life. We even have alumni who join us for opportunities to speak with current students about life at FRCS, how & why to get involved, and what to expect after high school.

Student life at FRCS is vital to the overall growth and development of our scholars. We engage in service learning & leadership projects through all grades that extend into our communities. As one student said, “I really think the FRCS motto ‘enter to learn, exit to lead’ is one that isn’t like anything else!”. This philosophy is modeled in and out of the classroom. Students share their desires and needs, and programs are shaped to reflect them. We’re focusing more and more on student voice and student-led initiatives to help prepare our students to take on these leadership roles once they depart FRCS. These opportunities give students the chance to explore their passions and curiosities while developing skills to be successful beyond the classroom.

A couple of my favorite programs are Elementary Tutoring and Peer Mentoring which span across our K-12 district. These programs provide our older students the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills while forging lasting relationships with peers as role models. These positive relationships between students of varying grades truly enhance the feeling of community at FRCS. Often our Student Councils and Honor Societies put together fun events for our ES & MS students throughout the year to further develop the feeling of community. One student mentioned, “Foxborough Regional Charter school is somewhere I feel safe and have loads of fun”.

FRCS provides a growing number of extracurricular opportunities for students to be involved. We have academic teams such as Destination Imagination, Robotics, Science Olympiad, Math Team, Debate & Mock Trial. Leadership & social awareness opportunities such as Student Council, Student Advocacy, and Honor Societies. Those related to the arts such as Orchestra, Chorus, Art Club, Poetry Out Loud, and Theatre. We have some of the most competitive athletic teams in our league including volleyball, soccer, track, cross country, basketball, wrestling, cheer, dance, baseball & softball.

In closing I leave you with this thought from one of our Middle School students who said, “There are no ‘special moments’ that stick out to me because all of those normal and little moments are special to me”. We welcome you to come and join our community of little moments that make this place so special.
