Dear FRCS Elementary School Families,
We are excited to introduce a new educational tool this year here at FRCS Elementary School in grades two through four. Starting this fall, we will use NWEA's MAP assessment tool. In 1977 a not-for-profit organization made up of educators and researchers formed NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association). NWEA made it their mission to help kids learn, and now over 9 million children in the U. S. are using this data tool (MAP) to optimize learning opportunities for each student.
MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is a computerized adaptive assessment tool. The adaptive piece is what sets MAP apart from other student tests. As students take the test, MAP adjusts the questions' difficulty in response to how well the student performs on the last question. These adjustments mean that your student's individual ability is measured through their individual performance on a given test. In an ideal student testing session, the student answers approximately half the questions correctly and half of the questions incorrectly. Your child's teacher will review this with your student, as every student should expect to be challenged and know that they are not expected to answer every question correctly.
Students will take this test three times a year, fall, winter, and spring. Taking the test three times over the year allows us to measure your child's growth over the course of the year and from year to year. As a school, we will assess students in reading, language, and mathematics this year. These tests are not timed, but usually take students about 1 hour to complete per testing session. Students will take their tests with their math and ELA teachers during regularly scheduled learning blocks.
You may be asking how the data from this test will be used at FRCS Elementary School. MAP identifies your child's opportunities for academic growth and allows your child's teacher to build on your child's strengths. Teachers will use this information to guide their individual, small group, and whole-class instruction.
The schedule for MAP testing is below.
Thank you for helping us get started using this exciting new tool to better support your child!
