Save the Date for FLL EXPLORE - Robotics Teams Tryouts! (Grades 2-5)

Save the Date! First Lego League Explore Tryouts will be held the first week of October for students in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. Please see the message and tryout form below from Coach Rotondi!

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Fall tryouts for the 2022 - 2023 First Lego League Explore teams will be in October.

Tryouts will be held by grade level. Parents are expected to pick up promptly at 4:15 at ES Door E2. The FLL EXPLORE coach will dismiss your child to you. Extended day services are not available (unless you are currently registered). With regret late pick-ups will result in your student moving to the wait list.

Try Out Schedule:

Grade 2: Thursday, October 6th

Grade 3: Monday, October 3rd

Grade 4: Tuesday, October 4th

Grade 5: Tuesday, October 11th

Please type each section of the FLL EXPLORE Try Out Form and return it by Friday, September 23rd before 3 pm if you would like your child to attend the tryout to:  Jane Rotondi/ ES Room 178. You will receive a confirmation email that your child may attend the tryout.

FRCS has three FLL Explore teams. Students will be placed on teams pending openings. The teams will meet on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 3:00 – 4:15 this school year.  Attendance is important to the progress of the team. Team meetings will begin in October. We do not meet vacation weeks or on “no school” days.

The teams will follow all of FIRST’s season guidelines.

During tryouts the students will be participating in a few “lego building” challenges, talking/presenting, and working with a FIRST computer program. A rubric was developed for tryouts. Students will join the team based on rubric score, coach observation, and student grade level. Teams are formed with a balance of multi-aged students.

I hope to let you know if your student made the team by October 14th. There may be a mandatory second try out day pending the outcome of the first try outs; there is not one planned at this time. I will let each parent/guardian know the results as soon as I am able to via email.

The rubric includes the following criteria:

Team work

Interest in robotics

no response

not personal interest

Presentation skills

Please let me know if you have further questions about the formation of the new teams. I realize this will be a challenging process for all of us and I look forward to working with you.

Kind Regards,
Coach Rotondi
