Northeast Elementary District Orchestra

The Foxborough Regional Charter School is pleased to announce the start of the Northeast Elementary District Orchestra!  The first of its kind, it is intended to give students at the elementary and middle school levels the opportunity to audition and play in a competitive framework.

Mission:  The mission of the elementary district orchestra is to identify students at the elementary and middle school levels grades (K-6) who show promise and proficiency in playing their chosen instrument at the most fundamental level.  One of the goals is to promote excellence in musicianship while providing a platform for students to play in a full orchestral setting with some of the finest student musicians of their age.

Auditions: Open to all students in grades K- 6 who play one of the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello (Violincello), String Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium (Baritone), Tuba, Snare Drum, Timpani, Bass Drum, or Glockenspiel (Xylophone).

Fees: $25 per student to audition, and are to be paid on (see “buy now” link below) at the time of registration.

A $25 confirmation fee is required to accept the seat in the Northeast Elementary District Orchestra for those who have auditioned and are admitted by the judges.

Audition materials:  Available by instrument in PDF form (at the bottom of this page) for student video assessment.    Make sure to upload and video both Shepherd’s Hey and Trumpet Voluntary for your instrument.


Audition Requirements:  All students are expected to submit a video link of their audition via YouTube, with the proper link sent to the judges at for review.

Video Recording Requirements:  Video must show ALL required parts of the audition by (11:59 pm on November 26th, 2017) to be considered.

    1. Submitted video recordings cannot be edited or spliced except between audition pieces.
    2. Sound quality must be adequate to judge material.
    3. Sound enhancement features may not be used in audition materials.
    4. Student’s head and fingerings must be visible during the entire session on the video recording in order to qualify audition materials.
    5. Audition fees must be paid at the same time that the audition link is emailed and both must be time stamped within a 24-hour time period of each other to qualify.

Judges: reserve the right to disqualify a video based upon suspicion of inappropriate splicing, sound enhancement, or misrepresentation of any kind, and the final judgement remains at the sole discretion of the judges.  There are no refunds of audition funds.

Final selection: of participants for the Northeast Elementary District Orchestra will be selected within four weeks of the deadline for auditions, but no later than (December 24, 2017). An email will be sent to all families prior to that time confirming each student’s final status.

Scoring:  The method used for scoring of auditions will be the same as for professional style orchestral auditions.  The judges will determine the student’s accuracy in pitch, rhythm, tone, dynamics, mood and keeping time. While scoring will not be made public, parents or music directors may email for details of your particular child’s audition.

Acceptance:   If a student is nominated as a candidate for admission into the Elementary Northeast District Orchestra, and they accept the nomination they must submit the confirmation fee of $25 by (11:59 pm on January 7th) it is understood that:

  1. Students are required to attend the day’s rehearsals in full and in person and remain for the entire performance under the terms of the agreement.
  2. All Students must be accompanied by an adult (over 18) chaperone for the entire length of the rehearsals and the concert at the Foxborough Regional Charter School. (131 Central Street in Foxborough, Massachusetts 02035)
  3.  A Confirmation fee of $25 is due via for every student who is selected for participation in the Northeast Elementary District Orchestra to accept the nomination.  If confirmation is not submitted by (11:59 pm on January 7th) to accept the seat, that student’s seat will be surrendered to the next available student.  Confirmation fees cannot be refunded after submission.
  4. The Northeast Elementary District Orchestra rehearsals and concert are scheduled for Friday March 9, 2018, with a (Snow date of Sunday March, 11th).
  5. If a student is selected and the child cannot attend the rehearsals and/or the concert, the parents or guardians of that student are asked to kindly make it known by return email at the earliest date possible.

Meet Our Conductor:

Misha Grandel studied trumpet at the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory Central School of Music in Russia, and continued his studies as a teenager at the Rubin Academy Music School in Jerusalem, Israel. Mr. Grandel holds a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the Amsterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands, and his performance certificate from Boston University.
In 1991 Mr. Grandel served for three years as a member of the Israeli Defense Orchestra, later becoming the Principal Trumpeter for the Israeli Symphonyetta Orchestra, playing with both the Israel Philharmonic, and the Jerusalem Symphonies. Misha has performed throughout Europe including engagements at the Royal Concertgebouw and since moving to the Boston area in 1999 Misha has continued to perform both in New England, internationally as a soloist, and with various orchestral and chamber groups.  He is the music director at the Foxborough Regional Charter School as well as a brass instruments instructor at the Newton and Needham public schools.
