Computers Grades K-5
The lower school lab is fortunate to have an individual computer for each student. Each class students are able to spend time on the computer at their own work station. The lower school students have been busy learning about safe internet searches, graphing on Excel, and explored just a few of the many features of WORD. Students are enjoying learning the skills to change fonts and letter colors. It was exciting to see and listen to the buzz in the classroom the day they graphed, some for the first time on a computer. Each class K – 5 participated in the International Hour of CODE in December. Students were asked to pick one of several themed coding programs. Students have opportunities for coding in almost every class. Each class also has a new typing program. In the world of touch screens and texting students will find that strong typing skills do assist them in school. Typing is introduced to Kindergartners and time is spent in classes (and students have home access) at each grade level to encourage accuracy, speed, and proper hand positioning. In the lab students hear and see about how computers and their own personal interests can lead to careers such as a computer scientist or coder; they also know there are many other jobs in the field of computer science or other jobs that use computers.
